Out of the 8 lakh people who commit suicide every year, 1.35 lakh are Indians. The suicide rate in India has touched 10.3 per 1 lakh people and it is the 10th leading cause for premature deaths in India. The leading cause of suicide is depression in people- a sense of helplessness accompanied by a feeling of being worthless.
Withdrawal from social environment, Engagement in Self-harm, self-destructive behavior, communication of suicidal ideation (eg. Talking about wanting to die, feeling hopeless and empty), saying bye to loved ones, excessive substance abuse- all these are common signs that a person may be suicidal and that the person needs help immediately.
In India, the suicide rates among the youngsters are on the rise. It is important now more than ever to spread awareness regarding suicide prevention and try to bring the stigma attached to it, to an end.
