World No Tobacco Day (May 31)

According to the World Health Organization, usage of tobacco claims as many as 6 million lives every year! This figure is all set to grow to an alarming 8 million in the coming decade.

Tobacco is consumed worldwide in the form of cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco and hookah (shish) and it contains Nicotine, a stimulant that is responsible for the highly addictive properties of Tobacco.

Prolonged usage of tobacco can lead to a host of problems such as lung diseases, lung cancer, excessive blood clotting, constricted blood vessels, coughing,  heart diseases, anxiety and much more.

80% of all premature deaths due to tobacco occur in low or middle-income households. The youth of today is increasing engaging in tobacco consumption gambling with their future by putting their health at risk.

Death due to Tobacco is extremely preventable. All it takes is the right support system, commitment and awareness to ensure that precious lives aren’t lost at the hands of tobacco.

The Department of Mental Health Education has prepared some posters on ‘Quitting Tobacco’ on the occasion of the ‘World No Tobacco day’.
